Redwood

Redwood

I stand next to a redwood tree
and reach into the air,
what I wouldn't give to feel
the breeze that blows up there.

Yet while the tree is big and tall
and I am small below,
it teaches me to be myself
and someday I will grow.

It never is a race to see
who first can touch the sky,
but always just a loving push
the confidence to try.

As I grew up I ventured off
and sometimes left the tree,
but when I came around again
it was always there for me.

As I grew I passed the tree
in height now tall I stand,
but I never would have made it here
without its helping hand.

It showed me love and helped me grow
taught me good from bad,
and forever will I thank that tree
for that tree is my dad.
